Tuna Melt Sandwich
No Image
The tuna melt is the ultimate diner sandwich — warm, melty, and satisfying in under 15 minutes using pantry staples you almost certainly already have. The tuna salad filling gets a textural boost from diced celery and a tangy kick from Dijon and pickle relish, making it far more interesting than plain canned tuna. Cooked in butter like a grilled cheese, the bread turns perfectly golden and crispy while the cheddar melts into the tuna. Retro comfort food at its best.
Ingredients
- 2 cans (5 oz each) tuna in water, well drained
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp dill pickle relish
- 1 celery stalk, finely diced
- 2 tsp Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices sourdough or rye bread
- 4 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
- 2 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Drain tuna and place in bowl; flake with a fork
- Mix in mayo, relish, celery, mustard, salt, and pepper until combined
- Spread tuna mixture on 2 bread slices
- Top tuna with 2 slices of cheese each; close sandwiches with remaining bread
- Butter the outsides of each sandwich
- Heat skillet over medium heat
- Cook sandwiches 3-4 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese is melted
- Slice in half and serve immediately
Notes
Drain the tuna very well — excess liquid makes the sandwich soggy. Mayo-forward tuna salad works best here; it melds with the melted cheese beautifully.
