Everyone needs a great weeknight taco recipe, and this is it. Seasoned ground beef with a homemade spice blend — no packets needed — delivers more flavor and less sodium than the store-bought version. A splash of beef broth after the spices go in creates a saucy, clingy coating that makes every bite flavorful. These tacos come together in under 20 minutes from start to finish and are completely customizable for the whole family.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8-12 taco shells (hard or soft)

Toppings

  • Shredded lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Salsa or pico de gallo
  • Lime wedges

Instructions

  1. Brown ground beef in large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking apart as it cooks
  2. Add diced onion and cook 3 minutes until softened
  3. Add garlic and cook 1 minute
  4. Drain excess fat
  5. Add all spices and stir to coat meat evenly
  6. Pour in beef broth and simmer 3-4 minutes until liquid mostly evaporates
  7. Season with salt and pepper
  8. Warm taco shells according to package instructions
  9. Fill shells with beef and desired toppings

Notes

80/20 ground beef gives the best flavor. Drain off excess fat after browning but leave a little for richness.
