Caprese Salad

No Image
Caprese salad is Italian minimalism at its finest — ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and fragrant basil are all you need to create something spectacular. The rule for a great caprese is simple: use the best ingredients you can find. A truly ripe, in-season tomato is non-negotiable; fresh mozzarella (the soft, water-packed kind) rather than shredded is equally important.

Ingredients

  • 4 large ripe tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 1 lb fresh mozzarella, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 1 large bunch fresh basil leaves
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1-2 tbsp balsamic glaze
  • Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Arrange tomato and mozzarella slices alternating on a platter
  2. Tuck fresh basil leaves between each slice
  3. Drizzle generously with extra-virgin olive oil
  4. Drizzle with balsamic glaze
  5. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and plenty of fresh black pepper
  6. Serve immediately at room temperature

Notes

Serve at room temperature — cold kills the flavor of both ripe tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. Take both out of the fridge 20 minutes before serving.
